Maps - Resources for Teachers

ODT pioneered the use of Peters maps in corporate training programs and we have been the official marketing arm for the Peters map since 1998. In February 2001, ODT granted permission to the TV show WEST WING to feature the Peters map in their award-winning series. Since then, ODT had been catapulted into the mapping world in a way we never believed possible. Since that time we have published the "What's Up? South!" world map, the Hobo-Dyer Projection map and SEEING THROUGH MAPS book. With three new products scheduled for launch in 2003-2004, we find it hard to imagine ourselves as simply a human resource consulting company. ODT's mission of "honoring differences" and "teaching people to see the world from a broader, more inclusive perspective" remain at the core of all ODT's activities. Plans for the next five years include extensive in-service teacher training and train-the-trainer workshops to expand the reach of our message.

Seeing Through Maps
SEEING THROUGH MAPS: Many Ways to See the World - $24.95 This book is about so much more than cartography. Map projections are used as tools for understanding the world from different points of view -- those of the world's countries, the world's cultures, the world's people, and the world's history. Seeing Through Maps also explains the principles and hidden messages contained in a number of unique maps and provocative images. It includes the Peters Projection Map; the Van Sant GeoSphere Map; the Fuller Dymaxion Map; a Toronto Canada-based equidistant map; Minard's Map, which tracks Napoleon's march on Moscow; Petit's African Diaspora Map; and a cartogram of global warming. It also includes the original McArthur Universal Corrective Map of the World, an upside down map that has Australia on top. The new REVISED and EXPANDED edition includes: Cartogram of 2004 USA Election Results, Hobo-Dyer Projection maps, and a new chapter called, “Are Maps TALK instead of Pictures” which challenges the conventional notion that maps are representations of reality. Instead, the authors assert that maps are propositions or arguments, and used as tools of persuasion or exploitation. When people in power control the mapmaking, then maps represent the interests of people in power. This book strips the veneer of authority off the status quo, and calls for a true democracy where people use the power of maps to speak (and argue) for their own interests. The new full-size equal-area map is expected in February of '07. To learn more about this remarkable image go to Steve's site at: watermanpolyhedron.com or see the prototype map at watermanpolyhedron.com/CART2.html or learn more at www.ac-noumea.nc/maths/amc/polyhedr/Waterman_.htm or spin his world at watermanpolyhedron.com/CART5.html This is the most exciting new map we've seen in quite a while.

The Power of Maps, by Denis Wood (paperback, 248 pages)
The Power of Maps by Denis Wood. 248 pages, 6" x 9" format. Retail = $19.95; The Library Journal says, "This book accompanies an exhibit called 'The Power of Maps,' which was held at New York City's Cooper Hewitt Museum from 1992 to 1993. For those not fortunate enough to have seen the exhibit, the book stands by itself. It aims to show that every cartographer has an agenda of some kind and to assist the map user in figuring out that agenda. The writing is entertaining but a bit wordy and irritatingly full of ellipses." In 1995 the Whole Earth Review wrote: "Denis Wood unmasks the map for what it is: a communication tool imbedded in culture, history, selected perspectives and--yes, sometimes--bias. Even the most simple map is a highly selected, generalized, and symbolized picture of something the mapmaker wishes to communicate...The Power of Maps explodes myths, offers insight, and arms the map user with the mapmaker's perspective." This book has great images, and was written for a sophisticated reader. There are 46 pages of footnotes (which is about 20% of the book length!). If you need more map theory...this book is for you. Otherwise, see SEEING THROUGH MAPS above for an easier and more entertaining read.
