VIDEO: Many Ways to See the World (30 minutes)
Twelve compelling world maps are presented in the new video Many Ways To See The World. The most provocative images found in SEEING THROUGH MAPS (by Wood, Kaiser & Abramms) are presented in this fast-paced program that has changed the way its audiences view the world...... Originally $20 .....now free, pay shipping only. The video has three powerful messages that are conveyed through an analysis of maps: 1. We can only understand the world if we're willing to see things from multiple perspectives! 2. The "truth" must be seen from many vantage points. 3. One person's voice can make a huge difference in the world!........ The video tells great map stories…including how Stuart McArthur developed McArthur's Universal Corrective Map with its unique downunder viewpoint. Learn how Gerardus Mercator never intended to draw the world as many of us have always seen it! Images created by Len Guelke, Arthur Robinson, Tom Van Sant, Arno Peters, Buckminster Fuller, Paul Hoffman (founder of EarthSeals) are featured players in this unique program....... Many Ways to See the World is designed to generate interest and awareness in maps and their messages. This is a provocative learning tool that uses historical and current images to generate interest in the subject of maps. Maps DO make a difference in how we see the world! We want to get this inspiring video out to the widest possible audience. We really do want to get this in front of as many eyes as possible....... Order a copy or call us…let’s talk: 800-736-1293! The Population Map (35 x 52) Laminated, rolled and tubed
The world as never revealed before! See where the human beings of the world live, and how many are where. The map image is startling, provocative and BEAUTIFUL. Each country is shown proportional to its population. The map presents people, not territory. Each square of the grid on the map represents a million people. From the perspective of population, China is the biggest country in the world! India is not far behind. For a real shock, compare Indonesia with the United States. This map shows how the USA is only a small part of the whole, 4.5% or less than one-twentieth of the Earth's humans. The main map is enhanced by a series of startling and informative images at the bottom: Population, by continent, throughout human history. This series of "snapshot" images shows the people, and where they were at (1) 100,000 years ago, (2) at the time of the birth of Christ, (3) at 1650 AD, (4) at 1900 AD, and includes (5) population projections for the year 2150. There is also a map of population density showing where there are more than 30 people per square mile. In contrast to the usual continents of land, this density image shows the continents and islands of humankind! NOTE: This 2005 map is still in stock, AND we have a new version based on U.S. State Dept projections for 2015. The population has increased by 12.7% in the the ten-year interval…but at the same scale (each ¼ x ¼ “ square equals one million people) the new map is HUGE! Get both and compare Details on the new map (and how to order) are here: http://www.odtmaps.com/detail.asp?product_id=PopMap-2014 FOR MORE INFO on the 2015 map … See: http://www.populationconnection.org/site/PageNavigator/PopulationMapnewsrelease.html and http://www.populationeducation.org/sites/default/files/resource_files/Population_Map_0.pdf and the press release HERE: http://www.expertclick.com/NRWire/Releasedetails.aspx?id=57631

Pacific-centered Peters Map paper, folded.
Pacific-centered Peters Map, paper, 20.5”x32” plus information panels & self-cover, folded, $9.95. The Peters Map has been referred to as "cartography's defining moment." It has attracted more press coverage, both praise and criticism, than any other map in history. It was featured in the hit TV show, The West Wing. Now, for the first time in North America, the Peters Map is available with one more novel, thought-provoking twist…the Pacific Ocean is in the middle. This new map "feels" quite different from the Africa-centered Peters Map. The new map brings your visual focus onto the oceans instead of the land. This map will challenge students to think about the world, and USA-centrism, in a whole new way. It provides an entree into many topics of discussion. The traditional Peters wall map is 3’ x 4’ in size (see 4th, 5th and 6th items below) and is color-coded as a “political map.” This newer Pacific-centered version is color-coded as a “physical relief” map showing mountain ranges, different types of terrain, etc. The new color scheme includes vivid colors – purple for high latitude and high altitude, yellow for deserts, green for vegetation, and white for the ice caps. The new format (folded size of 4" x 9.5" with a self-cover) makes it handy to file and store. And it looks quite different with the new centering…this is the first time a Pacific-centered Peters has been available in North America. The new low price of $9.95 makes this Peters wall map very affordable, and the mid-size image (2’ x 3’) fills a particular need of people who don’t a have a full wall to devote to the larger 3’ x 4’ map. It comes loaded with valuable web references – eleven web sites to get more information and free classroom resources. The new explanation at the bottom of the map provides a balanced interpretation, particularly useful for teachers and home-schoolers. ISBN# : 1-931057-14-1

Hobo-Dyer Cylindrical Equal Area Projection (11" x 17") - Laminated
The Hobo-Dyer Projection (HDP) takes its place among important map projections. This new HDP map belongs to the family of Cylindrical Equal Area projections in which the latitude and longitude lines form a rectangular grid. Other projections in this family include the Lambert, Gall, Behrmann, Edwards and Peters. The HDP retains qualities of the other equal area cylindrical projections, but is more visually satisfying. Commissioned by ODT, Inc., created by British cartographer, Mick Dyer, the map was derived by modifying the 1910 Behrmann projection. For special pricing on quantities of 100 – see web category: "Special Deals! Close-outs. Seconds.”
NOTE: This map is printed on both sides! The image shown here is one side: North-up, Africa in the center. Turn the map over and you see the EXACT same map with different orientation and different centering: South-up and Australia center-top! Picture of the South-up side, more info, activities and a quiz can be found at www.odt.org/hdp

Hobo-Dyer Equal Area (21" x 33") - PAPER - South on top. Africa-centered.
The World turned upside down: This map is the closest you can get to the Peters map that was shown inverted on the West Wing TV show in March 2001 (Big Cheese Day - "Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail"). If the show's fictional Cartographers for Social Equality was a real organization, then they would approve of the Hobo-Dyer along with the Peters. Available only in paper, folded to A4 (European size) size = 210mm X 297mm (8.27" X 11.69"). Published in the UK by the New Internationalist, this is a special limited edition of the HDP map. Prof. Ron Doel in the Department of Geosciences at Oregon State University says, "My Department of Geosciences posted a large version of the map near the front entrance to our building. Students hurrying to class stop by it as if pulled by a magnet; it generates much discussion."

McArthur's Universal Corrective Map (23" x 35")
Laminated - rolled and tubed - Unique downunder viewpoint with cheeky Aussie humor. This map was created by Stuart McArthur of Melbourne, Australia. He drew his first South-Up map when he was 12 years old (1970). At age 15, he resolved to one day publish a map with Australia at the top. Six years later, while at Melbourne University, he produced the world's first "modern" south up map and launched it on Australia day in 1979. It has sold over 350,000 copies to date. Mercator Wall Map 34" x 52" - Laminated
A good example of a "bad" map. Used by teachers to contrast with our Peters or "What's Up? South!" world maps. This map is USA-centered, and can be used to illustrate the pitfalls of ethnocentrism. The map is politically up-to-date as of 2000 and is bright and colorful. NOTE TO TEACHERS: We recommend that you NOT use this map as the only world image in your classroom. THE LAST OF THESE MAPS. The map was published by Rand McNally until 2001. We bought their entire inventory at that time. In 2005 when we asked them to license this image to us so that we might reprint the map, they wrote back, "We received your request for permission to reprint the Cosmopolitan World Map. We are not interested in releasing the film for that title for one primary reason of which you probably understand . . . The North America centered Mercator projection conveys a worldview and corporate image that are contrary to Rand McNally’s mission of Map, Navigate, and Discover YOUR World (not “ours”). We do not license content or publish products that promote ethnocentrism." There are less than 10 of these maps available. Please indicate your preference for grommeted (no plastic tube) or non-grommetted (with plastic tube). WOW, if Arno Peters were still alive today, he'd realize that his battle against the Mercator image has finally been won.

Mecca-centered Map Postcards (4 x6) 100-pack
FRONT OF POSTCARD READS..."A New World Map with Mecca at the Center of the World. --- A conventional map contains distortions because the world is round and a map is flat. Such maps can give a very inaccurate idea of the direction and distance to Mecca from other places in the world. On this new world map the direction of Mecca and the shortest distance between Mecca and any other place world is easily measured by a straight line. --- It is amazing that Mecca is approximately at the center of the land mass of the world." Great resource handout to supplement presentations on world maps. Reverse side has lots of room for writing your message. One free sample card is available above. These packs are available at a special price of $40 per 100. Produced by Len Guelke (see custom mapping below) at the special request of the Canadian Islamic Congress. [NOTE: This map is an Azimuthal Equal Area Projection. All continents are shown at true size and proportion. The reference to “Mecca being approximately at the center of the land mass of the world” can be said to be equally true of Jerusalem, or Athens for that matter. That region is roughly the antipode (point directly opposite on the globe) to the center of the Pacific Ocean, which is where the least land is located on Earth.]

CUSTOM MAPPING: A map designed to show the world with your city in the middle
Cartographer Len Guelke created this unique world view...a map with his home at the center. This equidistant projection tells you exactly how far it was from anywhere on Earth to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Draw a straight line on this map from Toronto to anywhere in the world and, with some simple math, you've got the real-world distance. In order to achieve this benefit, you need to sacrifice some shapes and sizes. Look at this map. Take a good look. What do you think? Would you call this is an accurate map of the world? If you think it is, why? If you do not, why not? If you recognize North and South America, do you also recognize Africa? How about Australia? Let's get really specific: trace Australia's shape onto a separate sheet of paper. Leave the name off. Show it to some friends–how many people looking at this do you suppose are going to say, "Of course that's Australia–anybody would recognize it"? Why would an honest mapmaker make a map that distorts some land masses so severely? This map has limitations even with regard to distance. You can accurately measure the distance from Toronto to, say, Paris, France or to Caracas, Venezuela, but not between Caracas and Paris. The given scale does not apply. The only constant distances are those from Toronto. That's what the map claims. That's exactly what it delivers. ********** Len can prepare a custom equidistant map for your city and provide a unique world view just for you.*************The result can be an electronic that you use to print from. Or we can publish the map for you. For the standard option of an electronic file, Len will put your city at the center of the map. Image sized at 300 DPI for 8” x 8”. Names on all oceans, up to five countries, and up to ten cities. Concentric circles (if desired) with distances in miles or kilometers. Graticule if desired. Image provided as a PDF or editable file, per your specifications. ODT retains the copyright, and the $199 price includes permission to reproduce up to 1,000 copies of the map. Add-on pricing at one cent per map. Email us with your specifications and we can provide a finished image within 10 days. Call or email for details on other options: 1-800-736-1293. 1-413-549-1293.
